After a lot of research I decided on a chalkboard wall, a
cleverly designed tree bookshelf and a superhero inspired wallpaper design on
the opposite wall.
I am also going to convert the large cupboard into a reading
corner with two comfy beanbags to sit, relax and read on.
This was all meant to be an additional present for William’s7th Birthday and after running the idea past him and
then James they both are keen to get this started as soon as possible.
So there I am buying Marvel Avengers Wallpaper and it dawned
on me that I should really get some curtains to match!
When we first moved in I purchased some white floral
curtains quite cheaply and thought “they
will do for the time being and with winter coming it will be dark and the white
won’t make a difference”
This has been true up to now. The Boys haven’t questioned
the curtains or the design on them and they haven’t been getting up at the
crack of dawn to wake me up and start the day; the curtains clearly worked.
So I realised that I needed to do a curtain upgrade but
every style I looked at seemed to be quite thin and this left me thinking that
it probably wouldn’t matter about the thickness and the Boys are well settled
within a routine so it shouldn’t matter. Thinking that it was best to leave it
I left the store and promised I would investigate further and get the curtains
another day.
I am so relieved that I didn’t buy them!
The following day at 5.30 am James slowly and quietly sneaks
into my room and asks if it is time to get up. Of course it wasn’t time to get
up! It’s 5.30am child!
Well here is me rather groggy and tired trying to explain
that it was too early and James, thanks to the curtesy of the film Frozen, says
“I can’t the sky’s awake so I’m awake!”
*sigh*
This then made me wonder, is it worth investing in blackout
blinds?
Does anyone else have them?
All the curtains that I have found seem to fairly thin and
would need a fabric attachment to block out the sun creeping in, so my next
thought was blinds.
I obviously don’t want them to sneak an extra hour in bed
but with spring and then summer approaching (come on it was only Christmas
yesterday, how is it March already?) that I am sure James’ sleep patterns will
be knocked right out with longer days of sunshine.
In searching I have found that there either seems to be just
coloured blinds from Ikea or a distinct lack of child friendly
blinds.
I did find a good selection of roof windows from the company
VELUX Roofblinds where apart from a selection of colours they
also offered a varied Disney collection which looked fun.
Is it normal then to think that I haven’t started decoration
the room until I have resolved this issue? I just don’t want to finish it and
find that nothing works or matches. Or should I consider a slightly different
design that would include a nice designed and suited blind to help?
Home Decoration isn’t really my thing so any help would be
greatly appreciated!
I would say you should invest in blackout blinds. I have them in the bedroom and it's so much better than the normal ones. I also bought a blackout blind for the living room, so I can see the telly on a sunny day. :)
ReplyDeleteBlackout blinds are great. You can also get curtains that have a blackout lining. If you've got the fittings in place for curtains they'll do the job. We have them in our bedroom so I know they work.
ReplyDeleteJust remember, with blinds, to always keep that cord in it's blind cord safety clip.
right now we have an old comforter hanging in front of her window. No matter what time it is, sunshine means its time to get up
ReplyDeleteI also have them in the living room to help with glare on the tv but I would not put them in a bedroom. I agree with Jeremy. It's normal for us to be woken up by the sun. Blackout blinds and curtains mess with our natural circadian rhythms. Found you through The Single Parent Linky at Confessions of the Single Parent Pessimist.
ReplyDeleteWe have a stick on black out blind that we picked up from Mothercare. It works with those suction pads. They work well until they lose suction! I have no problem using the blackout blind because otherwise my girls would be up at the crack of dawn and awake until 11pm (in summer!) so I'd never get any peace! Haha!
ReplyDeleteOh and try Childrens-rooms.co.uk
ReplyDeleteWe have blackout blinds but as they're machine stitched roman blinds there are still tiny holes in lines where some light gets through. For the summer I put up the Gro company's blackout blind, which just attaches by suckers to the window - it's really effective!
