We were pleased then when we were contacted by the Appy Foodand Drinks Company to try some of their health juices.
So who are the Appy Food and Drinks Company?
Appy Food and Drinks is an award winning company that
believes in making healthier products the right way. They bring over 10 years of knowledge and
passion to develop their own formulations using the most innovative and natural
ingredients.
All sounds great to me but there were a few things that I
obviously wanted to check out because, let’s be honest, a lot of companies have
a healthy claim but can often fall short.
I am pleased to say that after an extensive look that they
are coming back as a healthy juice for children and here are some of the
reasons:
Each juice is spilt in half. 50% of the juices is Spring
Water and the other 50% is made up of concentrated juice from fresh fruit.
(Depending on what each carton has labelled) this obviously means there is no
added sugar and 50% less sugar, and calories, than a 100% juice drink. The team also use Stevia which, until now, I had no idea what it was.
Stevia is a healthy but sweet plant. They use this as a
replacement of sugars within the drinks which makes each drink still taste
sweet but also then provide a low level of sugar.
What about taste?
We received 4 different flavours of drinks.
Orange and PineappleApple and Summer Berries
Apple and Blackcurrent
Tropical Fruit
From a Parents point of view it was quickly apparent that
the juices tasted as sweet as most other drinks available. The different ranges
of drinks available offered a wide selection to choose from and suited any
taste that you or your child might have.
Most carton drinks available are filled with pure concentrate
and with that X amount of added sugars. This drink was different. This isn’t presented
like every other drink because it is clearly watered with natural spring water
so rather than a full concentrated taste you are actually drinking a diluted juice.
This then just confused my thinking as I expected the boom of high intensity
that I was usually expecting from a children carton yet in reality I was
drinking something that was MUCH healthier. Once my mind had corrected its
comparison to its unhealthy neighbours the pure flavours came through perfectly.
For the children this seems like a chosen choice. Each
carton is brightly coloured and has relevant characters to engage the child;
ideal for days out and also for packed lunches.
The boys each had their favourites too.
William really enjoyed the Tropical Fruit whereas
James enjoyed the Orange and Pineapple; which, to be honest, surprised me as I
thought they would choose the character over the taste.
From investigating the ingredients, Stevia and why Spring
Water is used it also allowed us to form an understanding of what should be in
healthier drinks; something that I hope we can duplicate when we make our own
drinks in Home School this term!
I am also lucky enough to offer you a chance to win a hamper
of their drinks and an Appy bag. (As seen below)

ReplyDeleteSounds promising. I'm one of those annoying parents that checks the ingredients of everything that I give to my son (and pretty much everything for myself too, to be honest). Its so refreshing to know that there are treats out there that are genuinely healthy for our little ones, as there's so much that is just packed with sugar and artificial colours/flavours!
ReplyDeleteMy solution for juice is to buy a big bottle of 99.5% fruit juice, and water down to 50-50 when I make him a drink.
Great post!

These are good, I never knew what stevia was either (excuse spelling!) so thanks for looking into that! I drink too much hot chocolate for my own good and need to cut it down haha but it's my fav!
