Bad habits that children do when teaching

As a teacher,  both as a primary school teacher,  piano teacher as well as home educator, I have seen and taught a lot of children over the last few years. One thing I have realised in home schooling is that it doesn't matter what environment children, mostly boys in my experience,  all have the same bad habits. I'm confused though where they get it from,  I'd it's learnt behaviour from  particular environment or if it comes built in to children.

I'm going to use this post to explore some of these, I doubt if I will come to any conclusion but would be interesting to hear what you guys have to say.

Guess work.

When reading, for some reason they achieve a lot of guess work with what they perceive the story to say.
For example; if we are looking at a picture of a dog in the park playing with a Frisbee and yet the sentence underneath might say "Floppy is having fun playing with Chip" the child might go on to read the first two or three words "Floppy is having...." at this point their eyes wonder to the picture and they will not read but guess. "......a play today"
At which point if you wait or ask them to reread the part they become distracted,  confused and stubborn to continue because in their mind they've already read that part.

Finger spaces.

This is mainly for first time writers. I understand and appreciate that its a lot to do.  We have to manipulate a pencil, form letters, sound and spell out words and now put our spaces in, all in a time frame when within 18 months we went from writing our name and getting praised to this. However the bad habit is this; in a one to one conditioning and with constant reminders finger spacing is achieved.  Yet with a separation from that all words are joined together.

Handwriting.

Boys seem to have a tendency to do big unformed style of writing at the earliest opportunity.

And finally,  amount of work.

Children have a completely different concept of what to achieve. Given a target of say three sentences to complete. If one is completed perfectly then that's enough. Anything else is now considered to be "work" and the excuses become more frequent. "I'm just getting tired" or "how much longer as this is getting hard"
