Guess Work

So we are entering week 9 of Home schooling.

We are starting to go down to separate routes simultaneously. As a trained class teacher it is interesting to see how William is developing independently rather than being in a class. Although this is interesting it is still slightly frustrating.

William is thriving in the less is more unschooled approach.  Unknowingly, William is producing more work, in both picture and written form as well as in discussion and understanding, as he would be being in a classroom.

Yet that being said his reading has regressed slightly.

This is normal though,  I often found being a year 1 teacher that children, when pushed onto a harder level, regress to a lower point before they move on to the harder level. William is exactly the same. I have upgraded him to level 3 of the Oxford reading tree scheme.

He managers to read, with much needed encouragement,  this level of book. Which is average for his age. However, his regression is evident in his form of guess work.

I've mentioned this before in a previous post.

He is use to, because of how previous teaching has taught him, to look at the picture to help identify the difficult word. But as the levels of the books have increased he has begun guessing more.  For example: "Kippers new pet, Pat the fat bat, sat on dad's hat" becomes "fat bat sat on hats"

It's frustrating for me because I want to engage and stimulate William to the point of being happy and comfortable reading higher levels. Yet due to the homeschooling set up I have in a semi structured learning I don't pressure him to over on and subsequently he moves on at his own pace.

So today I tried something different.  I gave him a lower level book with the hope that he would read and not guess. However,  he proved me wrong. He is now so use to guessing, believing that its a harder, and missing the points of the story.

So how do we move on and get past this?

I don't know.  So if you guys have any suggestions I would love to hear them!
