Often when I am driving I am with just one of the Boys;
James is often taken to Nursery whilst William is, at home getting ready for
Home School, left with my elderly father
(who I also help out since we lost Mum) Alternatively William is off with
me on a Home School project whilst James is at Nursery.
However; there is always one moment, especially due to its
duration, where we are all together: When the Boys are picked up from their
Mums and we are heading to Church.
Every Sunday we head to Church which is about a 30 minute
drive but it isn't going to Church that makes this moment special.
Each week I put my playlist on; the playlist is quite
extensive but because it is often repeated the Boys, as well as myself, know,
pretty much, all the lyrics to the songs.
Every week I never know which song it will be but there is
always some in car singing.
We all do it even if we don’t admit to it; if you’re driving
when a song comes on and we all, ultimately, believe that within that moment
that we are the next possible winner of the X-Factor and instantaneously belt
out, usually badly, the song that is playing.
I absolutely adore that the Boys do this too.
But the best part, for me, is when one of the Boys hears the
opening bars and you hear them say: “Are
you ready Daddy?”
This is the cue; everyone in the car is now aware that the
song we are about to listen to will be belted out at the top of our lungs.
This week it was William’s turn; the song ‘Tonight’ by Fun
was our chosen belter.
The seconds before the lyrics are sung, after taking a glimpse
in the mirror, you can see the focus in the Boys eyes.
William is getting good at knowing the songs word for word;
James is ready to dance like a lunatic until the chorus comes on because at
that point he too will know the words.
I have no idea what the three of us must look like when we
are pulled up at the traffic light or when other drivers are going past. All
they will see is a grown man pulling emotive singing faces with the occasional power
fist.
(You know this; the
epic build up in the song where all you can do is flex your arm and clench your
fist to express your upmost involvement into the power of the song. No? Just me
then?)
You see this crazy man and you take a look at the back of
the car and see two mini versions doing exactly the same.
I, personally, don’t care though; this is one of those
moments that has become routine for us three and one that I, not only look
forward to, will cherish forever. Even when the Boys get older and it stops
being cool to breakout spontaneously into song.
Do you sing in the car with your child/children? Do you have
a favourite song? Or has your little one started joining in with you when music
is on at home?

I love this so much! I can just picture the loud singing and the fist pumps and the car seat dancing! So much fun. :) We also love to sing along in the car. You're right about us probably looking like fools but who cares it's so much fun! Great post! (Get us a video of this next time lol)
Ha thanks! I think everyone loves it really and it definitely doesn't matter we don't care we just enjoy going for it! I would have got a video but I broke my phone and my stand in, whilst its getting repaired, doesn't have a camera. I will upload one as soon as possible!
This is awesome. I picture myself doing car sing-alongs one day, but I feel silly singing the ABCs and whatnot now and they're not even a year. Maybe when they join in it'll be more fun.
Sing like no-one's watching that is my motto, I have no ability to hold a tune but who cares if you enjoy it right?
Oh yes! The Power Fist! In our house it's usually accompanied by a hairbrush in the other hand. I don't drive so all our singing is done at home where no one can see me make a fool of myself.
Thanks for commenting. Ha one day and then you'll remember this post! It definitely more fun with them!
When we do it we all sing in tune I'm sure anyone listening would agree :-) lol
Thanks for commenting Vickie! Oh I'm glad I'm not the only one to do the power fist! In house singing is definitely just as fun!! And in the safety of your home!
That's so sweet and sounds wonderful, when OB is in the car it's track 5 from frozen we never sing it loud or he puts his hands over his ears, I love to listen to him very softly singing. When it's just me and ATM we sing very loud and very proud. This afternoon we danced like loons to take that and Taylor swift, so glad my little sensory boy is finally liking music xx
Thanks for commenting. That's absolutely great that he's finding a way to like it. And love that he will sing softly. Moments of them singing in which ever way they can is always lovely.
Martyn you already know what my daughter and I are jamming to whenever we can! Funny post, something every parent misses once their children grow up.
Thanks for commenting Gary! I know and love that you guys do that . It is something that I wok always cherish as know they'll grow up quickly and I'll lose it. In the meantime we're going to carry on loving it.
I do sing in the car with my sons, but it's usually classic rock and roll. Trying to bring them up right and all...lol. Great post!
Thanks for commenting. Ha well as long as it's singing and you're educating them properly ;-) then its fine.
There's always plenty of singing with our three in the car. I love how enthusiastic and unselfconscious they are. Hopefully they'll never grow out of it!
Glad its a common thing. I love that part too. Its a shame that they might grow out of it but I hope they don't. Thanks for commenting
haha amazing! I love this post and it's so much fun! Also you weren't singing "Let it go" from Frozen so even better hehe xx
Thanks Sarah! No we weren't which is a good start although I am now annoyed that you said that as ive now got it in my head and just before bedtime!! lol Nightmare!
THis is brilliant and I can completely resonate. We are not at that stage yet but we do sing in the car - mostly nursery rhymes although Zach has a song that he makes me sing at the moment when I started singing daddy get on the choo choo train to the tune of here we go round the mulberry bush. Throughout the journey he tell me the next thing that is getting on or off the choo choo train...it varies from himself, the car window and nannie's broken fence and he's always chuckling in the back! I love it! Thanks so much for linking up with #twinklytuesday
Love this post! I think u'll find everyone does it, including the power fist !! X
Thanks for commenting Lisa. Ha that's great! I don't think it matters any joint singing is always good!
No problem thanks for inviting me to link up.
I hope so just doing everyone admits to it! We love the power fist!
Great Post, Martyn. These are truly special moments. My son and I love to sing in the car too. And like you, we don't give a damn what the outside world thinks when they see us. We often sing along with country music. The lyrics are clear and simple and often repetitive.
Thanks for commenting Mathew! I love it. I think everyone has their own preferred music choice that the family enjoys. Not giving a damn is the best part.. ...I love how they don't care and hope its something they continue not too
Awww this is lovely!! What a special moment for sure! Treasure every minute! X
Thanks!! I truly love this. Oh I will cherish it. Time will fly but and will lose it :-( but in the meantime we're going to just have our fun.
Ah brilliant, sounds like so much fun! Libby loves to sing, her current favourite is angry men from les mis which they do at drama. I hate les mis but love to hear her sing it.xx
Thanks for commenting Natalie! It is fun. Love a good car sing song. That sounds great....Although altho a little disappointed that you hate les mis.....I thought you had taste ;-)
