May Bank Holiday - Sweeps Festival

We had an amazing Bank Holiday Weekend; we ended up doing so much and we were lucky to spend it with a new friend which made the activities even better, especially for me to have some adult company for a change!

One of the activities was a local festival that is held every May Bank Holiday locally.

We are based in a group of small towns but collectively we are a historic area; in celebrating this we usually have festivals placed throughout the year. The Sweeps festival is always a family favourite as it incorporates education, fun and family togetherness.

The modern day Sweeps Festival is a colourful mix of music, dancing and entertainment with more than 60 Morris and Folk dancers as well as general entertainers celebrating throughout the three-day festival.

The festival recreates the joy and laughter enjoyed by the chimney sweeps community and the one time of the year that they would leave the soot behind and have some fun.

So much fun to be had even if a rather busy! I thought it would be ideal to show you some of what we experienced:

Families sitting and soaking up the atmosphere together.

Although the majority of the shows were along the High Street there are also activities, fun fair and cultural stalls within out local Castle grounds.

Obviously we had to have a go at some of the fun fair activities, especially hook the duck!
(Why it is so expensive to win some cheap, breakable rubbish i'll never know, but the boys enjoyed it)

Along the High Street you found the collection of Morris and Folk dancers doing a variety of displays.

For some of the little ones the only way to see was through others legs!

Half way through and time to grab some lunch; I fear though that there were more burger than child!

Please note that if you are a blogger and, like me, you take hundreds of photos of your children and what you're doing please don't put your phone down to start eating:

One of the joys as a child was always visiting a little quaint sweet shop for some goodies. Obviously it's a tradition that I have continued with the Boys.

Sometimes it's easier to put your bag down, use it as a seat and enjoy the dancers.

I always loved this weekend as a child and it's something that I loved sharing with the Boys each year but with them now getting older it was a year where they could enjoy it more.

The atmosphere is fantastic! Not only do you see everyone enjoying what's going on and especially with their families you also just see people embracing the fun side of their hobbies.

i love a good English town event, we have some very odd customs (morris dancing always seems odd to me, and far darker than we give it credit lol).

Looks like a good time was had by all.

We're always good at supporting local events. We're quite lucky that we manage to have a few available. Lol I don't know why although I guess some look sinister.
