Review - Letts English Practice Workbook - Age 5 - 7

It is the start of a new school term and many of us have bought new school uniform, new shoes, made pack lunches and the shipped our kids off to school; for many others we have seen our little ones starting school for the first time.

Being Schooled or Home Schooled we, as parents, are in a role where we are guiding our children through education. This can be a tricky start for many of us, especially when we consider that it has been a long time since we were actually at school. So what can we do?

Besides creating a good communication with our child's teacher we can also create a learning environment at home; in doing so we can support, first hand, our child's learning at every possibility.

It is difficult to know exactly what our children are learning at school and even more so how to support and encourage them in what they do. That would be the case unless you use Collins and Letts success practice workbooks!

Contents

The English workbook provides a extensive range of topics that work hand in hand with what your children are learning at school; cleverly designed to match the updated National Curriculum!

The workbook is broken down in specific topic sections: Reading, Writing, Punctuation, Grammar and Spelling

How each book helps

Each category is specifically created to cover the strategies that are used within a classroom.

Reading, for example, is broken down into Phonics, Characters and then the Context that they are in under the different strategies provided, which are uniquely coupled through engaging activities.

This is then followed by each individual Curriculum sub-topics associated with reading. Such as: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Comprehension and Extended Comprehension Skills.

(This level of detail is presented within each learning category mentioned in the above contents.)

Parental Guidance

For a lot of Parents entering these topics can become a little daunting; However, each question is broken down with detailed answers which allows ANYONE to be able to follow, mark and then guide the children to achieving a rounded understanding.

For any parent that is unsure with some of the more technical terminology you will find that there is also a helpful Glossary at the back to gain a greater understanding.

As a Parent

I have been using this book alongside some of the other Collins and Letts Literacy books for the last two weeks, as part of Home School, with great success.

The book is aged between 5 and 7 which means there are elements that William (6) would find challenging; despite this, the clear thought on how the workbook has been designed allows both William and myself a clear path to learning and understanding.

This is then enhanced by the colourful images, page design and diagrams which would engage any child.

As a Teacher

We follow the curriculum guidelines for Literacy within our Home school activities so it was interesting to see how the book fitted with lesson objectives. However, this book has shown that it works smoothly alongside the updated necessary requirements needed. The use of vocabulary and questions used which is then coupled with a stand tier system to difficulty provides activities for a mixed ability class.

With the easy to follow answers and marking scheme it would go hand in hand with currently used resources.

I would advise though that you take photocopies of the pages to repeat tasks if necessary and use spare paper to present thoughts, working out and presentation.
