Home School - All about Me - Body Map

One of our Home School topics this term is All about Me. In this topic we will be covering our bodies, the different changes that happens, what makes us unique, different organs and parts of the body as well as how to keep healthy.

The aim with this is to cover a few of the topics in KS1 that are usually covered all in one big project.

We started off by making a body map.

Using some wallpaper the Boy's drew an outline around their bodies. Ideally this should show our body shape. However, unknown to me that this actually was quite difficult; especially when it tickled! So we have some wobbly outlines but the Boys got the general idea for it.

Next we explored our height. Despite being 2 and half years difference between the boys they were quite shocked to see that they were similar heights. I discussed the difference between Centimetres and Foot and Inches and they chose to use the latter as a reference point; although we may explore that later on.

William was 3ft 9in (and a bit, he wanted me to clarify that!)
James was 3ft 8in so really not that far behind!

We then looked at our weight. Despite the minor difference in height their weight showed a bigger difference. Again, as with the height, we explored the different ways that weight can be measured.

William was 4st 2lbs and James was 3st 5lbs.

We then put our measurements up on our body map and put a date. I want us to keep track of how we progress but equally I don't want height or weight to become an obsessive number. Or equally for them to believe that it carries a significance to worry about. We decided then that we would keep track of this on week 2 and then week 6 and then one final time on week 10 to see if there was any change to our measurements and then to see what this means.

The next part was to look at the organs that we have and what their functions are!

Have you ever done a body map with your children?

Would you give this a go as project at home?

This is such a good way to get kids learning....My girls seem to learn more when they do activities like this rather than sat writing or reading a book.

We've done a Body Map before and the kids really enjoyed it. I then stuck it on the wall and they were thrilled to see themselves on the wall! I didn't know the mathematical concept - it was more just for fun. What you have done is such a great way to relate the mathematical concepts to their own bodies. #FamilyFun

This is a great idea, I might try to make one with the kids over half term. I tried making a 'hug' with Annie when she was 4 by tracing round her torso and outstretched arms but the tickles won out and it didn't look anything like a hug!!

This looks like great fun! I love to make body maps with my English learners as a great way to learn the names of the body parts. Kids love drawing around each other don't they! Thanks some have for joining up with #FamilyFun Linky. Hope you pop by again to show us what happens next!
