Home School - The Puppet Project - Finger Puppets

If you've been following our blog recently you will know that the boys and I have started our summer topic all about Puppets.

The idea is great, explore, investigate and make a variety of different puppets; perfect for all ages and all abilities!

With this is mind we decided to start the project with simple finger puppets.

Here's our guide to making them!

Materials

Coloured Paper/Card
Pencil
Scissors
Glue

Extra's

Wobbly Eyes (These could just be drawn and cut eyes)

Method

The Boys started off by using a small plate and drawing a circle around it on coloured paper. (Keep the rest of the paper for later on)

Then using scissors the boys cut the circle out and then folded it in half and then half again.

With the circle now separated into four sections the boys cut a long to make quarters.

Using one quarter the boys then glued along one straight edge.

Then with one side glued roll it into a cone. (This can be fiddly. James struggled with this so age of the child might determine how much help is needed)

The Boys then repeated this process to form 2 cones.

Once they have dried you need to bend the top of one cone down.

After putting glue on to the bent part of the cone the boys then stuck it to the inside of the second one.

The boys then chose small wobbly eyes and glued them on the top "head" cone.

Using the remains of the paper from earlier, cut out the same for ears. The boys made the ears extra long, this way the could fold and glue them inside of the head.

They then made two strips from the leftover paper and stuck them on for arms.

The best part of this design is that you can make two puppets from one circle. James decided that he wanted to make a mouse and a rabbit.

William decided that he wanted to make and elephant and a crocodile; both followed the same design as above.

The boys loved making these and are discussing what to create next! They not only loved the simplicity to it but found the idea that puppets could be on our fingers really amusing and interesting!

The design is really straightforward and you could create a large selection of different animals; the best part is that it can be done by all ages .

Do you think you would give this a go and make some? Let us know if you do!
