Home School - Viking Runes

For our new history topic this term we are learning about Vikings. They have always been a favourite of mine but following reading a horrible history about them the boys wanted to find out more.

As always with these topics I try to incorporate other topic and lessons. In this case I thought we could mix literacy in and create some writing with some Viking runes!

After a quick search on Pinterest I found these:

We then looked at different stones that had runes on and how the different symbols would create words.

We discovered that most of the people described often had some over exaggeration to their character; something that made James really chuckle.

Now to make our own!

Materials

Thick Card
Grey Paint
Green Paint
White Paint
Black Pen
Paint brushes

The boys started off by colouring the rectangular card with grey paint.

Using white paint, whilst the grey was still wet, they mixed in the colour to make it look more natural with more than one tone going through.

Using green paint and cotton wall they painted around the edges because they wanted to make the runes look old.

Using a black pen and the runes charts above they started writing their message.

Both boys then wrote their names and they each had a God like power:

"William Kitney Rain Power"

"James Kitney Thunder Power"

This was great fun and so simple to do! The boys spent a lot of time trying to read some of the stones we found on Google as well as write little secret messages to each other once we had finished the craft.

If you are looking for a rainy day activity then I would definitely recommend trying this out! Paint your own runes and over exaggerate!

What do you think about them?
