I am a dad that likes to look after himself and try to
enhance my geeky and rustic style.
I, for a very long time, was uncomfortable with my
appearance and the older I got the more I wanted to find my “style”. I went
through having long hair, styling and layering, cutting it shorter and even at
times colouring it! Yet, I was, until four years ago, unsure of what felt like “me”;
long ish hair, brushed with a quiff, short on the sides and, a new addition, of
a beard.
Although this style varies in lengths on both my hair and
beard and I have at times let it go a bit wild but I have always taken time to
try and style to the above.
I seem to have become a dad who enjoys styling and grooming
myself to finally feel fully comfortable within my appearance.
I was, of course, really happy when Legends of London
offered me their top of the range grooming products to review.
The Legends London are more than just makers of another
generic men's grooming product. Experts in male grooming for the past decade,
the Legends are dedicated to sourcing, producing and distributing the finest
male grooming products for customers who refuse to compromise.
Legends can be broken down into 2 categories; the Barbers
and the Barbershop Products.
With over 30 years of experience Darius Kravitz opened his
first shop in 2008 following his second in 2016 in The Strand. The team of
barbers have both the most modern techniques like sharp styling combined with
classic barbershop skills.
The Legends unique range of grooming products was launched
in 2012 and handcrafted by Darius himself when he was on the hunt for product
perfection. From then he has produced Gel, Pomade and Alum Matchsticks with
the latter winning awards. (Although subsequent and similar awards have been
won)
The first product I tested was the Maximum hold 220ml Hold Gel.
Presented in a stylish 220ml tub the product instantly
jumped out with its direct packaging aimed at men’s grooming with a classic
groomed man on the front but with a bright and vibrant red and white backing.
I have to admit that I was a little taken back when I opened
the gel to find that it was bright pink. Beside this bright colour I was still
keen on trying the gel on my hair.
I was aiming for the wet hold look so made sure my hair was
damp to start. I then applied a small amount to my fingers and then rubbed them
together for good coverage and massaged it through my hair and then brushed it
into my styled quiff.
Alternatively, you could have brushed of blow dried the hair
for a medium matte finish.
Some gel in the past has had quite a strong aroma and
obviously with the bright pink colour I was expecting it to be strong and I am
pleased to tell you that I was pleasantly surprised and mistaken. The product
did exactly what it says on the tub, is lightly and sweetly scented and washed
off your hands extremely well.
I used the gel for a few days and every time it continued to
provide firm and strong standing hair.
Pomade is obviously a greasy, waxy, or a water-based product
that is used as an alternative to styling hair. It usually gives the user's
hair a shiny, slick appearance and does not dry it out. It lasts longer than
most hair care products, often requiring multiple washes to completely remove
it.
I was keen to see if this fulfilled that.
The packaging was very similar to the gel offering a
classical, professional and stylish gentleman on the front.
However, unlike the gel the pomade came in a white mixture.
The feel to it felt a lot smoother than any product that I have previous used
but still had the greasy and almost gritty feel to it.
Another similarity was the smell. The gentle sweet and yet
clean scent made it very appealing and not overpowering.
The application was simple; taking a small amount on my
fingers and evenly applying to my hair and then styling with a brush of hand to
the style of my choice.
Between the two products I have to admit to preferring the
pomade over the gel but that is more suiting to my personal style. It allowed
me to have a lift and offered a fuller thicker style that stayed firm for just
as long.
The Alum matchsticks
Sadly I could review this product fully because I don’t shave.
However, I can explain how the product works.
The standard problem that a lot of clean shaved men have is
irritation and cuts. Alum is provided to ease this and, potentially, stop men
from using the classic small piece of tissue and also soothes at the same time.
Alum, a natural antiseptic product to help soothe nicks and
cuts and to stem bleeding, is the main base to the product. Waiting until you
have finished shaving to lightly wet the matchstick and gently run it over the
area that is needed. It is easy to handle and easy to store and I believe a
more civilised approach to dealing with aftershave burn. They would, obviously,
be some stinging but from what I have read and researched I can see this being
a great addition to a male grooming routine.
Legends of London have produced stylish, sophisticated and
clean products to aid to any man’s grooming. It is for this reason why I would
suggest these products as a perfect gift for any dad this Father’s day.
