My Sunday Photo 03/09/17

This week Hannah and I visited Truro Cathedral.

We had a great time exploring the architecture on the outside and in.

The top of the choir pews were hand carved by a female carpenter in the Victorian era which was obviously incredibly rare and amazing!

I loved the pulpit. There were 6 prophets around and each with a different symbol.

Noah and an ark, Moses with a staff and tablet, Elijah and a raven, John the Baptist and a staff, Jesus with a Bible and Paul with a sword.

I found Moses the most intriguing. I couldn't work out why he had horns but after we found a tour guide she explained that it's a mistranslation. Apparently, from one of the earliest times the translation said he had horns and have since been sculpted with them. We found another statue with them too; all we need to do is see if other places have them!

Some great photos. Not one to be pedantic. Was Jesus a phrophet? I thought he was the one they were prophesisimg about?

What a fascinating place to share with your daughter...all that history and amazing details. I loved hearing about the female carpenter...can't help thinking that may have put a few noses out of joint back then! Have a great Sunday and thanks for sharing these beautiful photos :D

Yes, I share your confusion re Moses and the horns! Fascinating that a female carpenter completed the choir pews. It looks like a magnificent place of worship Martyn.

Wow, the sculptures and carvings are incredible. There can't have been many female carpenters around then!

I love Cathedrals and Truro looks amazing. Michelangelo also did a statue of Moses with horns, apparently the translation was supposed to be interpreted as rays of light. #mysundayphoto

As much as I am a non religious type personage I love wandering around churches and cathedrals. We have a beautiful one in Gloucester. (Famed for being where Edward II is burried and where parts of the Harry Potter films were filmed).

I do love the spectacular expanse and style of many churches and cathedrals. Love that classic photo of down the aisle with all the arches. Beautiful

I had no idea about Moses and the horns either but that's really interesting to know. I'll look out for it now in different churches. The detail is just amazing isn't it?

Hi Martyn, that is some architecture! I love the fact a female carpenter worked on the place, that was something back in the Victorian days!

Truro Cathedral is stunning. I've only ever seen the outside of it though. Love the prophets on the pulpit and how interesting that Moses has horns. I'm going to have to look out for that elsewhere now too!
