Our Week in Home Ed

Home Ed this week has been really busy.

We've had a week were we have had to fit life in around our lessons but we have, in some ways, managed to fit it in.

Literacy:

Adverbs, verbs, nouns and Adjectives.

In those lessons Will had to identify what adverbs were. This started off quite difficult for him. He was often getting muddled between the different types.

However, during the week he managed to get a greater understanding.

On the main activities he had to list and change sentences to list as many as possible.

He then spent the end of lessons making up as many as he could. It was a difficult task but once Hannah and I had suggested a couple William flew ahead and we found that all 3 of us were listing more and more once they popped into our heads.

Numeracy:

This week we have been doing short bursts of maths again and have been spending 10 minutes covering different topics. So this week Will has covered place value, number rounding up, calculating decimals as well as negative numbers.

He is showing that he has a good and solid foundation for this and can be left to push forwrds with the individual topics.

The rounding up of decimals he really showed some strength in.

Cooking and Baking:

This week, Will wanted to explore if other recipes would work in different styles. For example, he wanted to see if a stuffing recipe would work as a burger.

The concept was good and the recipe, which is already posted under our "My Little Chef" posts, ended up being incredibly easy to make. Plus, it was super yummy.

Science:

Eco bricks.

We decided to do a continuation of what we started last week with our eco bricks and recycling.

Recycling and making our eco bricks has been working brilliantly.

We found that we ended up having a smaller amount if rubbish being put out. So much so that we actually halved the amount and ended up using 1 bag of rubbish over a fortnight instead of putting out 2 a week.

And, as you can see, we created a lot more eco bricks in doing so!

STEM:

Binary and Coding:

We also continued our binary and coding.

Since the lesson last week Will has been making sure everyone in the house has been learning it by leaving notes and messages everywhere.

We also started making binary bracelets out of salt dough. We made the dough, shaped the beads and made holes for the thread.

We did start decorating them but sadly they broke apart. Subsequently we will need to start again and are thinking about choosing to do them in clay instead.

History:

We have been looking at the next stage of car development this week and looking at the start of race cars.

We found out that with the start of cars being more available to the public that racing them became more popular.

We learnt the many tracks that were made were more based on country tracks and small villages.

Unlike today, the cars varied in design rather than pure engine power. So racing between types was their main goal.

Cars also had a varied shape to them too.

Finally, we discussed what makes a good sports car ahead of next weeks lesson where we can design one.

Geography:

Like our history we continued in making our fact file in geography.

This week we looked at our High Street.

We discussed what makes up a good shopping high street as well as trying to recall the types of shops there.

We then made a list and set out to town to record on a tally chart the amounts of these shops.

We found that we have an eclectic range of shops which made the majority of the high street.

Going forward we plan to transfer this investigation into a math project and turn it into a graph.

We would also like to look at doing surveys and seeing if we can find out why people come to Rochwster.

Despite it bring a busy week I think we've done well and William has managed to cover a lot of topics and push forward with our subjects.

What do you think of our week?
