End of Home Schooling 2014

This is our last week of Home schooling for 2014.

But what about December Martyn?! Most of you will say.

That's true; there is still three weeks left, but I'm running on a school calender. This time of year in schools children start to slow down. There are Christmas songs to learn, pieces to learn for the play, Christmas wall displays to make, letters to write for Santa and all the Christmas craft to make.

So why should Home schooling be any different?

It's really easy, when home schooling,  to forget about what children actually do at school and how much time they spend on work. You often get into a routine week on week.

My style of Home Schooling is simple, we are semi - structured,  we do 'sit down' and structured school on a Monday and Tuesday,  following the government guidelines on the curriculum and after looking at the quality and quantity of work that William produces we can see that it is really beneficial.

We won't be giving up on Home schooling altogether either.  For example; This term, in literacy, we have been looking at: Lists, labels, Alphabetic order, Rhyming, Poems, Adjectives and their use and story telling through writing.  (Its a lot once you've listed it like that)

We will now be layering his understanding with fun Christmas activities.  We need to: Make a list for Santa, labels for presents and gifts, we will make a Christmas poem and a Christmas story. Using rhymes, order and adjectives.

This will show his understanding of the terms topic, as well as reinforcing his knowledge,  which sadly isn't something that they do in school.  And all of this under a the guise of Christmas.  It's fun and engaging for all.

So for the next three weeks fellow bloggers, friends and visitors you will see the Home schooling posts be completely influenced by Christmas.  I am quite looking forward to it and have no idea how it'll turn out.

This sounds very interesting Martyn, I'm enjoying watching your journey as a parent and teacher home schooling. Certainly sounds like you have everything covered and the one to one time must be so beneficial for your little one. Home-schooling isn't something I know a lot about but I have American friends who tell me its very popular over there. Maybe it will become more popular over here.

Hi. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you, it isn't always easy to get the balance right but it is always still worth blogging about it. (even if it gives me something to look back and laugh at)
I know out in America it is quite popular. But I was quite surprised how many people do it over here in the UK. there are a hundreds of home schooled children just in our little borough as well as then a lot of groups in Kent (5 groups that I am aware of) Saying that, apart from the group we attend, I don't really hear anyone talking about it.
There will be a few more posts this week on it. One on why I home school and another on the advantages and disadvantages of it. Realised at the weekend that I am blogging our journey but haven't really explored or blogged about Home Schooling so keep a look out. Even if it just gives you a heads up. :-)

How lovely. I will be following with interest to see what you get up to, I haven't ruled out home schooling myself.

Thanks for commenting. Home schooling is amazing. As I said to the previous comment that I have blogged about our journey but never about home schooling itself so will be doing some posts about that itself, hopefully this week.
