This weeks post comes from James (4)
He has had some difficulty working out what is reality and what isn't:
In Home School we have been looking at Fairy Tales. Upon having a discussion about them and explaining that they are usually made up, fictional adventures that feature heroes and princesses or they might be animals going on an adventure but whatever happens there is usually a happy ending. Following that this conversation happened:
Me: "So Fairy Tales are not real and someone just made them up"
James: "Oh, so they're like Myth's then!"
Me: "Kind of, but Myths are usually made up to explain something"
James: "Explain what?"
Me: "That there is a really strong Goat that helps Tomatoes Grow. We know that isn't true but people might have made it up to help others understand"
James: "So they help explain things? That's weird. But they are made up. So they're also fairy tales?"
Me: "No, fairy tales don't explain how something works or how we should treat each other, they're just fun and adventure"
James: "So Myths have to explain something?"
Me: "Usually, even if we now know that isn't true"
James: "Got it"
Two minutes later and I am discussing the work yet the boys are quite eager now to get going so keep interrupting my to start.
Me: "Boys, stop it, you can start in and second. Just give Daddy a moment to explain what we are doing and how this activity works!"
(Can you see where this is going? I didn't see it!)
James: "Daddy, if you're explaining something to us, and telling us how it works, then that makes you a myth"
Me: (Groan) "Almost, but Daddy is real so I am not a Myth"
James: "Yes, at the moment though. Later on someone might prove that you're not!"
Firstly, He is 4 years old!! Give me a break! Secondly, is it wrong that I questioned my own existence in that brief moment?
The following day we were in the car heading to the shops and James decides to do his normal random conversation; this time about a dream.
James: "Daddy, you know that dream I had last night?"
Me: "No darling, you haven't told me about it yet"
James: "Yes, I did, remember? We were both sitting in the park yesterday and we played and I told you"
Me: "No, we wasn't at the Park yesterday. Was this in your dream?"
James: "Yes, in my dream, remember? yeah? I told you about it then"
Me: "I'm sorry, I don't remember the dreams you have, they're in your head and not Daddy's but I would love to hear it!"
James: "Well, I did tell you? But it was really weird wasn't it?"
Me: "Was it weird, why?"
James: "I told you why!"
Me: "I wasn't in your dream darling. You have to tell me about it first!"
James: "Of course you'd say that, you're a Myth"
So if I am not here for next weeks "Out of the Mouth of Babes" then you may want to wonder if you even read this!

Awe that's brilliant! What an amazing little mind your son has, really enjoyed that!
You know you're raising a clever kid when he's exploring existential questions at four years old. You must be doing a terrific job :-) #ftmob
Haha, I love how they interpret complex concepts. Many years ago, when my mum was doing the SATs with the 7 year olds she taught, on the questions about classification of things as living or not living 'extinct' was described to children as 'something that used to be alive but no longer is. One of the children wrote 'God' in that category. My mum thought he had the makings of a philosopher! #ftmob
Brilliant! Love how James' mind works and his logic as to why you might be a myth! Did you ever get to the bottom of why James' dream was weird or did he just decide that having told you about it in his dream was sufficient? Thanks for linking up again to #ftmob :-)
hehehe! James is one smart cookie. What a brilliant mind he has x
Haha he's smart when he wants to be
Ha! Yes! This is true! I'll take the credit
Very clever. I think kids see everything differently.
No! He never explains them, he just assumes I know because I was there
Thanks Kim. He can be a clever sausage when he wants to be!
Hahaha that's very clever. I like how he thinks you know about his dream as you were there too. No wonder if you're not on #FTMOB next week, at the end of the day you're only a myth! lol
Haha kids logical sense with linking l. In really enjoyed reading this. I can understand how confusing it is I did a module at uni in philosophy and the whole realness and that gives.you a sore head X
