My Little Chef - Burgers

William and I have been meaning to give some more of the recipes a try from the lovely ladies over at My Little Sous Chef since he made their Aubergine Sandwiches but to be honest we have been running out of time! However, thankfully we had a free afternoon and thought that it was ideal to give one ago.

My Little Sous-Chef

My Little Sous Chef are a team that have created a twin cookbook where they have designed recipes that are presented in two different ways; one for adults and one for children. The children's book offers a more descriptive concept of the recipe through illustrations and smaller break down of written instructions; something that William found easy to follow.

After having a good look through the many fabulous choices William decided he wanted to make Mini Burgers.

Ingredients

Mini Burger Buns
800g Minced Beef
Grated Cheese
1 Onion
1 Egg
Lettuce
Tomato
Cucumber
Flour

(The original recipe called for 2 tbsp of Parmesan cheese and no onions but William wanted to adapt the recipe)

Method

The recipe for the team suggests starting with adding Parmesan cheese into the burger mix. William liked the idea of cheese being part of the burger so decided to use grated mature cheese instead.

After he grated the cheese he combined the mince and cheese together in a bowl and then he sliced an onion and added that to its contents.

William wanted to include onions but didn't want them on top of the burger; instead they were included within the mix but he realised later on that long and larger slices of onions would make the rolling of the burger difficult so suggests that you finely cut or grate the onion.

Using his hands he combined all 3 ingredients together until they were evenly mixed.

After beating and egg into a cup he poured it over the mixture. The Egg acts as a "binder" to hold all of the other ingredients together so the meat mixture doesn't fall apart.

William then made a small ball about the size of his fist of the ingredients and placed it on a pre-dusted surface. This prevents the sticky combination from resisting when rolling as well as another binding agent.

Then using a rolling pin her gently pushed the ball into a flat and round shape. He then Repeated the process until he ran out of mixture.

William then fried each of the burgers until they were thoroughly cooked through

With the burgers now cooked and waiting William went on to make the additional burger filling.

He started by washing the tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce and then cut them into thin slices.

Next it was time to construct the burger into different parts:

In stages 1 to 3 William laid the burger on to the bun and then added the salad on top and then repeated this process until all burgers were complete.

This is great fun and an easy activity for children although i admit it was time consuming as he wanted to make everyone perfect.

William happily followed the recipe well and even had the ability to adapt and change examples to make it his own.

My only thing here is the title "Mini Burgers" I can completely see that you can make double of the amount of burgers if you want with this recipe and have purchased the mini burger buns but it also works really well as regular sized burgers.

I didn't change what William did as it is his skill and his activity and subsequently our burgers were regular sized. However, they were super tasty and I can see why they are a fantastic recipe for children to either independently do or for a family to do together.

As always the combination of Adult and Child cooking book is brilliant but importantly the child version is really easy to follow and use for all age children.

So. what do we think?

Would you give this a go?

Will you try William's adaptation of the Little Sous Chef recipe?

If you do then please let us know! William loves hearing about it!
