Review - Transformer

I was super excited when we were asked to review the Optimus Prime Power Surge Transformer from Hasbro!

You are instantly struck by the colour and size of both the toy and packaging and there is an instant moment when you want to rip the box open, make machine sounds and start singing "Transformers Robots in Disguise".

Transformers were one of many toys that were introduced in the 80s that had shows alongside them and they have stayed a staple source with new incarnations trough each decade with Optimus Prime being the leader of the hear robots the Autobots. Power Surge Optimus is the latest in line with the show Transformers; Robot's in disguise.

What is new?

The action figure does come with a couple of accessories. As with the latest franchised transformers and off of the back of Michael Bay's films most Optimus Primes come with a sword and this figure is no different.

Yet, it also comes with an attachable flip carriage and the important Mini-Con Aero Bolt Figure. This is where this action figure is different: The mini-con unlocks the different modes available from vehicle mode, flight mode, robot mode and the new power surge mode. Within this you will find that each mode has accompanying sound affects that is unlocked.

You can also find different sensory interactions with flashing lights that go alongside the sound effects. (As seen below)

This wouldn't be a transformer without the ability to actually transform within the different modes available.

The accompanying instructions give an "easy 5 step" method to follow this movement but I did have to read this several times to grasp how to do it to show the boys.

I think after completing this several times that it would become easier to use but can see that movement and pivoting the different joints in different directions initially would be confusing for both adult and child.

Once completed you do come out with a cool and functioning truck but at that point I did feel slightly underwhelmed even if the design is pretty cool!

Personally, I would almost prefer the toy to be packaged like this with the robot design on the box so when you unwrap it you see the comparison between the stylish truck to the awesome and cool ready to use action figure.

The boys loved this and was keen on playing different roles with it but since then I have only seen them play with it in robot form and not transforming. Yet, with a shield, massive sword and lights and sound effects I too would probably keep it in that style!

Any Transformer fan would love this toy especially if they have any of the other figures within the Power Surge Range and I can see this being a must have toy in the run up to Christmas.

Optimus is currently RRP of £49.99 and has a recommended age of 5+.
