Our Week in Home Ed

Some of you may have noticed that there wasn't a home ed post last week.

To be honest Home Ed went out the window the last 2 weeks because Will has been unwell.

He was super tired the first week and looked pale so ended up sleeping a lot. Then this week he ended up with a stomach bug that put him out of action for a few days.

However, we have managed to do a fair bit to catch up. So here's what we managed to do:
Literacy:

Comprehension

This week we concentrated on comprehension. We started the work by discovering unknown words in a text and then using the context to grasp the understanding of the word.

We then created a word bank of these words and used a thesaurus to create other words that were associated with it.

We then pushed forward and answered questions relating to different texts that we were reading. At first they were one word answers to pick out but we finished with full and complete sentences answering different points.

This is William's strongest area in Literacy. He has an extensive knowledge and understanding of words and their use. He is also fantastic at recall and understanding in comprehension.

It was nice to see his strength shine through compared to other areas of Literacy where he would struggle.

Numeracy:

This week we have been concentrating on addition.

We started with basic addition of units as a warm up. We progressed by having a stacked unit to calculate. For example 1+3+2+4+1+9.

We then pushed forward and completed worksheets with addition of tens and then hundreds. Each time the calculations became harder by stacking more on top of each other.

We then finished the week by doing activities where Will had to pick the numbers out of sentences to complete the sum.

Overly all the majority of this topic he found easy. However, he did struggle towards the end. He found picking the actual sum out of sentences quite hard. He expressed annoyance that the words were "getting in his way".

Cooking and Baking:

Will wanted to try something new this week for his cooking however we were at the end of our food before our monthly shop. Subsequently, he had to make a list of what we had left and find recipes that he could make.

That alone was a fun activity for him.

He did find a spanish sausage pasta bake that would work!

If you're interested in the recipe then check out our "My Little Chef" post this week.

Science:

Our science this week was dictated to by Will.

He was watching a YouTube video of a guy make Candy Floss out of skittles and wanted to give it a go.

Here's the video.

Of course this sounded interesting so we went along with it.

It worked pretty well although the size of our Candy Floss machine was small so it didn't work as well as we wanted. We will be writing up on this if anyone would like to give it a try!

STEM:

Rainbow Jar

Hannah tends to lead this subject each week. Rather than teaching a lesson both Will and Hannah find something they can explore together.

Hannah came across the Rainbow Jar/Density Project.

Using different liquids they poured them in a specific order into a jar.

Due to the different types and densities of the liquids they sit in a particular order.

They spent time creating a hypothesis, measuring the size of the jar as well as measuring each liquid out carefully.

They then watched and recorded the results.

Like the Skittle experiment above, we will feature this on the blog soon!

History:

We have been continuing with our History of Cars topic. Rather than looking at the history of cars we looked at the development of the safety features and then discussed a "what if" scenario where we explored what we would like or want in a car of the future.

Will added a door that can open from any side depending on what use you want it for. If you're loading something big in then the door lifts up on the hinge in a style of the 1980s Delorean. If it is for passenger use then the door opens to the left or the right depending on where you're parked. However, if you're a wheelchair user then the door opens from the bottom and in doing so turns the door into a wheelchair ramp.

Other suggestions Will made was having a car run on coke. A fuel burning on the sugar and caffeine and the use of that can clean the engine at the same time. He came up with this after watching someone clean pans with coke. He also suggested soft coverings on the front and the back to ease parking accidents if bumping into others.

Geography:

Like our history we continued in making our fact file in geography and we looked at famous people from Rochester.

We found that Charles Dickens, Jools Holland, Pete Tong, Kelly Brooke and Peter Roger's all came from or lived once in Rochester. We also added Richard Watts who was an important politician of the time and who saw over the construction of Upnor Castle in the 1500s.

On finding these famous people Will listed when they were born and died, what their career was and what they did that made them famous.

Although looking above it looks like we did a lot. However, this was completed over a 2 week period when Will was well and able.

I am proud that despite him feeling like rubbish that he still put in enough effort to complete all of the above. Hopefully this next week will bring the same positive work attitude and we complete more with him feeling better!

What do you think of our week?
