Home School - The Tongue

If you have been following our topic this term you will know that we have been studying all the different subjects under the banner "All about me" where we have looked subjects like our brains, hearts and pulse and drawn a body map.

You may have seen from a previous post a while back that William has a rare mouth and one of the aspects is having a geographic tongue. Each patch can be a different size or shape, hence the name as with the tongue fully out it looks like a map, on the upper surface and sides of the tongue. It may occur in other areas of your mouth, as well although doesn’t in his case. This is quite rare and actually only affects 1% of the world’s population.

These patches normally cover the entire upper layer of your tongue; subsequently this does affect his taste buds and he can change what he enjoys eating. He can also become more sensitive to hot, spicy, dried, salty or acidy foods

The tongue then seemed like a good part to study for a lesson.

  • To recall information about the different tastes that we can taste with our tongue
  • To know these are caused by our taste buds
  • To create a replica of our tongue and discuss the different features

We started off by trying to remember some of the food that we had tasted previously and finding within that descriptive words for each food.

William was really good here and recalled everything that we learnt and subsequently, with his brothers prompting, James was able to do the same.

I then asked them what they thought made us taste these different flavours and William was first off by saying that it was his taste buds.

I then showed the boys this map of the tongue and explained the taste buds in different areas made us taste the different elements of each food.

 Activity

The next part for us is to make a tongue to add to our body map.

This is a simple and easy activity for anyone to do with their children. After cutting some newspaper into a tongue shape we then layered the pieces using pva glue and water creating a solid paper mache tongue.

Once this had dried we mixed some red and white paint to cover our model.

We then glued some bubble wrap over our painted paper mache tongue to represent the taste buds.

We then tried to recall the map of the tongue that we saw ta the beginning of the lesson. The boys struggled with this to start; they were able to recall the different tastes but couldn't remember where they were on the tongue.

We then found the different sections and labelled our tongue. William and James were both able to recall some of the food that we tasted previously to place under our labels.

The Boys loved doing this activity and it was great to see their prior knowledge came through brilliantly. So much so that William wanted to make a video of it.

However, for some reason I am unable to load that video up on here which is annoying! You can see it though either on our Facebook page of our Instagram account.

What do you think of the boys tongue and this lesson? Could you give it a go?
