Out of the Mouth of Babes #20

It is James’ birthday this Thursday so it seems only fair that this week’s Out of the Mouth of Babes is all from him.

This week has shown how much James is growing up in his logic, humour and understanding.

Logic

The boys have been in that beautiful age phase of being either perfect little boys or little pains in the next. When they are in the latter phase they really push their luck!

The boys had both been pushing to me to my limits and although we made it through the day without one of us losing our minds they were on their last warning. I sent them both into their bedroom to get ready into their mummy clothes before they were taken back; what they didn’t realise was that I was outside listening.

James: “Will, stop it, you’re hurting me!”
William: “Then stop jumping up and down on the bed whilst I’m trying to get dressed!”
James: “Just one last time”

*Loud bang*

James: “That hurt, you’ve hurt my eye *wimpers*”
William: “Well I warned you that if you jumped I would hurt you!”
Me: “What’s going on? Why are you hurting each other? I warned you that I would take your toys away if you started fighting again”

*Walks into their bedroom*

James is holding his eye and William is looking sheepish.

Me: What happened?”
James: “Nothing, I jumped on the bed and fell and hit the side. Didn’t I Will?”
William: “Yeah, that’s what happened. We’re being good!”

On dropping the boys off to their Mum I informed her of the potential black eye on James and repeated the above.

Mum: “James, what happened to your eye?”
James: “Let me go and just ask William quickly!”

We both laughed at this. I think he needed to confer!

Humour

We play this annoying game where we whisper one of our names and then pretend that we didn’t say anything.

*Whispers* “James”

This goes on throughout the day, often until one of us breaks; this time was slightly different:

Me: “James”
James: William”
William: “Daddy”
James: “Martyn, *pauses* I know where you live” *starts laughing*

Obviously in a small child’s voice whispering it I was a little scared. I had to laugh at the fact that he said it and called me Martyn!

Understanding

There is a bit of a spoiler here for Batman fans, if so look away now!

James came up to me looking extremely serious:

James: “Daddy, I need to tell you something!”
Me: What’s that then?”
James: “You know Batman? He’s actually Bruce Wayne!”
Me: “No way! Isn’t that amazing!”

I didn’t have it in me to tell him that I already knew!
