Coast to Coast - Fathers Day!

Over the next coming weeks, and starting today, Coast to Coast the American restaurant and bar are offering free starters for Dads in celebration of Fathers Day.

With this is mind they asked myself and some friends or family to go and eat, enjoy and experience what they have on offer on their menu. Of course this meant that we had an opportunity to be rather greedy and try a full range!

Due to a lot of sickness I wasn't able to take my family as I originally had planned but as a back up I invited my good friend Ben to join me.

Ben and I have a lot in common when it comes to fathers and without going into too much detail, we had a rocky relationship with our dads early on so it was nice to join in and discuss the strengths of being a father in comparison, as well as telling some poor dad jokes!

Starters

To get a good idea of the starters they had on offer with this promotion we ordered 2 each.

I started with the Spicy Calamari fried and seasoned with sea salt and chilli flakes.

I love calamari but you can often find that it can be rubbery and, if fried, the batter can be soggy. However, this was completely different! The batter was crisp and seasoned perfectly and the calamari although soft tasted meaty rather than rubbery where over cooked.

I then ordered the Chorizo and Mozzarella flatbread. The base is a freshly baked flatbread served warm, topped with chorizo, mozzarella cheese, hot green peppers and rocket, drizzled with garlic olive oil and served on a wooden board.

This was by far my favourite of the starters ordered. Everything about it was delicious, cooked perfectly and tasted phenomenal but I also loved the serving of it on the board. The rustic delivery of it made me want to put down my knife and fork and tear the it apart into pieces and eat it that way.

Ben ordered the American Potato skins. The options here were great with the added feature of making them yours!

Apart from being mouth-watering and fully loaded potato skins the choice of topping available, whilst also being covered with melted Cheddar cheese were:

Bacon and Cheese with sour cream and mustard.

BBQ Beef Brisket with sour cream and our signature BBQ sauce.

Overnight Tomatoes & Guacamole (v) and slow roasted tomatoes seasoned with garlic and rosemary.

These were bite sized and made the perfect starter for anyone who doesn't want to get full up to quickly. Just as the starters I chose, the potatoes were cooked perfectly and the combinations work really well.

We even had a competition to see who could try and eat one in one go! (Don't try this unless you're okay being gluttonous!) Guess who won?

He then ordered the Chicago Wings and chose the Buffalo sauce that was available.

The Chicken wings were served celery sticks and a lemon sour cream.

The wings were succulent and with the added buffalo sauce made them very moreish and packed with flavour. Ben and I were unsure about the buffalo sauce when ordered but it definitely adds another dynamic to the taste that neither of us had experienced before.

The starters were fantastic and a great way to start the meal. You could clearly see that each one had thought and experience put into the design as well as a good chef behind the scenes.

I will add as well that despite the fact that we ordered 2 starters each the second starter was still warm when we had finished the first. You can often worry about receiving cold food that is warmed but this experience pleasantly pleased us.

Mains

You would think that we would be rather full after those two starters but in good true dad sense we soldiered on to make sure we gave a fair review ;) )We're not greedy pigs honest....okay, maybe a little bit!)

I went for the 6oz Casterbridge Rump steak which is a 28 day and dry aged UK steak.

For me, it shows the quality of the chef if he can cook the steak perfectly!

Once again the chef showed his worth and the steak arrived perfectly and not over of under done. The accompanying peppercorn sauce added to the steak and definitely didn't over power the steak.

Ben chose the Classic American burger with the Monterey Jack cheese and bacon.

This was a whopper of a main and would suit anyone who has a large appetite!

Luckily, Ben is one of those men who has. He loved his burger but said the added cheese and made the real difference and would suggest that if others order it then it's a good idea to ask for the extra to add on.

Well we made it this far and had enjoyed every minute of the meal but we both thought it would be rude not to try the dessert menu!
Desserts

I went with the New York Cheesecake....who doesn't like cheesecake?

How to describe this? Heavenly, in every mouthful! It was a smooth and creamy vanilla cheesecake served with red berry compote, vanilla ice cream. Every mouthful made it more irresistible and I will be honest that if I didn't need rolling out of the door I would have ordered it again!

Ben chose the Chocolate Brownie which was full of walnuts and topped with dark chocolate sauce. Served with chocolate honeycomb ice cream.

I was admittedly gutted that I couldn't have this because of beinh intolerant to walnuts but made worse as every time Ben took a mouthful he made the most annoying sound of enjoyment.

He, as before, said that the accompaniment of the ice cream was perfect and really added that extra texture and flavour to the dish.

The food was heavenly and everything worked so well together. This coupled with the amazing and friendly staff!

If I was planning on taking my dad out for fathers day then I would definitely take him there, in fact I might try and convince the boys to take me as my treat! Ben and I had a great time and was brilliant to share the experience in the brotherhood of Dads.

With the added bonus that the starter is free for the Dads it just makes it a great experience for all involved! Just make sure you book!

Coast to Coast are also running a chance over on their Twitter +C2Crestaurants to win a meal for the best Dad joke....Ben and I thought we'd try, what do you think?

Ben:

"Did you hear about the guy who invented Polo's? They say he's made a mint."

Martyn:

"I'm rubbish at jokes but better at puns. Well, unless you're a kleptomaniac, t's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally."
