This week we have had conversations about our new car and some misunderstanding and mispronunciation that I wanted to share with you!
The New Car
This week I have finally got my new car. I have to admit
that I love it and apart from learning how to drive again in a car that feels
slightly alien to me, it is by far the best car that I have owned.
I have been telling the boys about the car for a long time
and in fact they were the ones that helped me choose it.
However, it has taken a few months to finally get to me so I
think that they had forgotten a lot of what the car looks like inside and out.
I left the boys with my friend Ben whilst I went to pick it
up and on arriving home I beeped my horn to be greeted by excitable boys to
finally see it.
Then this conversation happened:
William: “Daddy, are you keeping this car?”
Me: “Yes. This is the one that we chose. Do you
like it?”
William: “Yes but I don’t get something?”
Me: “What don’t you get?”
William: “Well you said you were getting a different
car but this isn’t different”
Me: “It is, Daddy’s last car was a Kia Venga and
this is a Vauxhall Mokka. They’re completely different”
William: “It isn’t though Daddy. Your last car had a
radio, a steering wheel, had our seats in it, special controls and was blue.
This is EXACTLY the same. I think you need to take it back and see if they’ve
made a mistake”
Me: “Darling, all cars would have those things
in it. The only thing Daddy could change was the colour but you both said you
wanted a blue one again”
William: Can’t you ask them for something special to
be added to it. I was all excited and now I’m not”
How do I tell a child that all cars around the world are all
the same? He did seem a little disappointed; I think he was still expecting Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to turn up!
The boys are allowed a treat each week from the shops
especially if they have been good. When I left the boys with Ben he decided to
treat them to a Snickers bar each after checking that they were allowed nuts of
course! But only once I was back and they had behaved for him!
James has also some speech delay and will slur and stutter
his words.
These two pieces of information combined made an enjoyable
conversation.
Ben: “Here you go boys you can have your Snickers”
They both happily start eating them and then James perked
up.
James: “I don’t like these, they taste funny”
Me: “What is it that you don’t like?”
James: “There is too much stuff in these nickers”
Me: “What do you mean?”
James: “There are a lot of nuts in nickers and I don’t
like nuts in my nickers”
Me and Ben: *Starts
chuckling*
James: “Stop laughing, it’s true. I wouldn’t mind
if there wasn’t anything in my nickers but I don’t want these nuts in them”
Me: “We are only laughing because you have said
knickers and not Snickers. Think about it, what are knickers?”
James: “Ladies underwear. *little laugh* but I don’t
think they would want nuts in them either!”
Later on in the week we went exploring and James decided to
take himself off into a little den to see what he could find. Off he went and
on his return he came back with a collection of Pine cones.
James: “Daddy, look! I have found all these nuts”
Me: “They are Pine cones darling and not nuts but
they are very similar”
James: “Are these the same nuts that were in my
nickers? They don’t look very tasty and might be why I didn’t like them!”
Me: “No. You can’t eat these. The ones in the
Snickers were different”
James: “Okay, that’s good then! I don’t think
anyone would want these in the nickers!”
Me: “You are completely right! I am sure no
would like them in their knickers!”
