7 Autumnal Activities for Children

We are in the middle of autumn and we are ploughing through Home Ed and our Geography topic of exploring autumn locally.
As you have seen on this blog and across social media that we have been enjoying doing different activities but we have also loved hearing from everyone who is using our lessons and making their own versions so I thought I would do a post to assemble all the different activities together.

Here are 7 Autumnal Activities you can do with your children:

If you are looking for an outdoor activity then this is ideal!

Go for a walk, wrap up and enjoy autumn and nature at its best. Look out for anything you would only see in autumn like acorns, conkers, sycamore flyers and different coloured leaves etc.

This is really easy and fun to do.

The objective was to find as many different coloured leaves as possible as they fell from the trees.
When you get them home leave them to dry if wet and then using blue tack stick them to a window. I would advise a window that gets the sun first thing in the morning!

This is very similar to activity 1 and continues the outdoor activity theme.
Using the RSPB site and other online suggestion we went with magnifying glass in hand searching for different mini beasts and taking note of where we found them.

We then collected materials of these places with the aim to use them within our mini beast hotel and entice our own little friends!

You have gone on an autumn hunt and a mini beast hunt but you need a place to now put your materials and for the mini beasts to live.
Here I have shown a step by step guide on how we have made our unique one as well as suggestions on how to create different ones. Depending on the age of your child then they might not be able to help but they can definitely still take part in the design process by drawing pictures and adding special features!

This is the final stage to points 3 and 4 but the activity is back to being child friendly!
Using the materials that you have gathered, your new mini beast hotel you have made and the understanding that was previously gained it is time to combine all of these and create a comfortable and versatile home for mini beasts to move in!

If you are looking for an easy, colourful and fun craft for nursery and primary aged children then this is a great activity.
The child can create the shape and design and depending on the age can cut and prepare the potato. Using the leaf shapes, as well as relying on prior knowledge of autumn colours from the autumnal walk, press the potato in an array of colourful paints and create a seasonal piece of art!
If you are anything like us you may have collected one or two (*coughs* hundreds) of conkers and are trying to find uses for them.
By drilling holes through the centre of conkers you can create sectioned vertebra to form your own moveable pet. With some string, glue and wobbly eyes you can create a snake, worm or caterpillar and then decorate appropriately!

I am sure that we will be doing a few more crafts and activities as part of our autumnal project so keep a look out but hopefully with these collected here that you might have some ideas to try!

What do you think? Any of these that you want to try?
