A Perfect Date with the Boys

If you are a regular reader here then you know that we are often swamped with home school activities. In fact if you follow us on Twitter or Instagram then you know that it is pretty jam packed and often with a variety of activities.

This is our life. I don't have a problem with that either because I always feel like I am a better teacher than I am a dad but we, as parents, work on our strengths. The problem with this is that we, as a three, don't really get any silly, fun and  none educated centred activities in.

The boys don't really notice to be honest; it is a new day with daddy and a new home adventure so they both just go along for the ride. Yet, despite the boys not minding, I seem to get a weird parenting itch where I just need to spent a day with them that isn't built up on routine.

Previously I have taken a day off and we went and explored some woods and just allowed the boys to be wild and free. Then, just after Christmas, we took the day off and just went to the park and just had some fresh air, sunshine and fun.

It hasn't been great weather wise and either which might have caused me to get a bit claustrophobic too so I needed to get out, have some fun and have a date as a dad with the boys!

It was a simple plan: Go watch Lego Batman and then have dinner; the perfect date!

The second we turned up and saw the "Make your own" sign the boys, and I, got quite excited!

James' favourite character! Of course it is the psychotic weirdo! 😉

Before we went in we did grab some pick n mix! I wouldn't normally do this but I thought as it was treat that it would make a nice change.

They took the job of filling their bags so seriously! I don't remember being this cautious, were any of you?

The film of course was amazing! In many ways the Lego Movie was so surprisingly good that I did wonder if this would be a let down and I think that was the right attitude to enter into it. The film was brilliant! The right level of silly, child humour, adult humour and nods in the direction for Batman fans, comic book fans, geeks in general and even the Lego Movie itself.

We spent a lot of the film absorbed and laughing, what else could we have wanted? I absolutely loved Batman as he somehow captured all the different types of Batman (Batmen?) we have seen in film. William loved Robin because he was goofy, silly and he thought his glasses were brilliant. James, as mentioned above, loved the Joker and I do get why. He was evil, had that twisted attitude and actually cared more about the "romance" with Batman than the things he did wrong.

We had been invited to go and eat at Frankie and Benny's and as that is directly opposite our cinema we thought it was perfect timing to go!

Eating out isn't something that we do very often. We are foodies but spend a lot of our time making our own meals than eating out.

Growing up it was pretty much the same. When we did manage to go out for a meal it would have been for a special occasion and a treat for us all! Amongst the memories of a treat I remember feeling like a grown up choosing my meal, addressing the waiter/waitress and telling them what I had chosen and finally enjoying still being a child by colouring the sheets or completing the maze map!

I don't know why but the whole experience is something that brings back fond memories and it is something that I make sure the boys can experience too!

The staff were brilliant and our specific waitress was amazing and addressed the boys rather than just assuming I would be ordering it all; something that was a pleasure for both the boys to have happen and for me to witness.

They both chose meals from the independent kids menu whilst I decided to spoil myself on the adult menu.

Food ordered and the boys got on with their colouring!

The came the food!

James had ordered the hot dog with a side of chips. Admittedly, and as you can see in the above photo, this meal was massive, especially considering that it was on the children's menu!

William ordered the make your own pizza which you can choose up to 3 toppings from a list available. He chose pineapple, pepperoni and bacon which I was unsure of but apparently it tasted amazing!

Just like the hot dog the pizza was massive but they did offer us the option for a doggy back to take leftovers home!

I chose the 8oz Sirloin steak (rare) with sides of chips, mushrooms and tomatoes (I did get onion rings but I hate them!) and had the lovely peppercorn sauce to accompany.

My steak was cooked to perfection! Which is something that I rarely find (no pun intended)

The service, staff and food was amazing and it definitely made a perfect little date for the boys and I to go on. The whole time we were there it reminded me of my childhood and all I could think was that I hoped these would be the memories that they have when they become parents.

The meal out made the perfect ending to an already brilliant day and just like most of the other times when we have had our dates it is something that I need to do more often!

It always just seems to easy to get caught up in the everyday that moments and days like this are few and far between.
